The MIDWOR-LIFE consortium has been working during the past 3 years on identifying and assessing the different alternatives for water and oil repellents for substitution. Now we release the draft reports for the key activities that will be presented in the workshop titled: “Substitution of PFCs from Durable Water and oil repellents used in the textile finishing industry”.

MIDWOR-LIFE project was presented in the AEI TÈXTILS booth and brochures were given out to interested visitors.
Following the awareness raising goal of MIDWOR-LIFE project, several workshops have been organized in the past month to present the results achieved by the project towards the substitution of perfluorinated and polyfluorinated chemicals.
During last month a total of 3 workshops have been held, 2 in Spain and 1 in Italy to discuss and debate the technical progress and the preliminary results on the environmental impact and risk assessment.
LEITAT presented a joint poster on LIFE-FLAREX and MIDWOR-LIFE projects during SETAC 2018 held in Rome on May 13-17th.
The poster was about the challenges for a comparative risk assessment among conventional hazardous substances and alternatives for textile finishing
SETAC Europe is dedicated to the use of multidisciplinary approaches to examine the impacts of stressors, chemicals, and technology on the environment.
Currently, the most used Durable Water and Oil Repellents (or DWORs) are made of per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs/PFAS) based on C6 chemistry after the inclusion of C8 chemistries (PFOA/PFOS) in ECHA’s restriction list (Annex XVII of REACH). Currently, some Member State authorities have initiated the process for the inclusion of C6 perfluorinated chemistries into the restriction list as well making the search for sustainable and high-performance products a must.
On April 17th, a major milestone of the MIDWOR-LIFE project was achieved with the last industrial demonstration of alternative DWORs at Nanomembrane manufacturing plant in Czech Republic.
A total of six textile manufacturers have collaborated with the MIDWOR-LIFE project on the industrial validation of safer and environmental friendlier DWOR products: Hidrocolor and E.CIMA from Spain, Nanomembrane and Innotex from Czech Republic and Biella Manifatture Tessili and Tintoria Finissaggio 2000 from Italy.
